As the economy for creators grows, there are more and more ways to make money on YouTube. And while some ways to make money are easier to get started with than ads, nothing can replace good content and an interested audience.
You might be able to make money on YouTube if you can be creative and willing to put in a lot of work. Here are some ways to make money that you can try.
1. Earn with YouTube Partner Program advertising
Let’s take care of this one first. Join the YouTube Partner Program if you want to make money from ads. And your channel has to have more than 1,000 subscribers before you can become a YouTube partner. You’ll also need to have watched for a total of 4,000 hours in the last year. If you check those big boxes, you can make money from ads.
Before you can become a partner, you must also meet the following requirements:
- Your videos must follow YouTube’s rules for making money from them.
- You must live in a place that is eligible.
- You must connect your Google Ad-sense account.
Click “monetization” in YouTube Studio to see how many subscribers you have and how many hours you have worked. YouTube will let you know when you can start the application process.
As a YouTube partner, you can make money from ads, chat features, and people who pay for YouTube Premium and watch your videos. In 2023, YouTube partners will also be able to make money from ads on YouTube Shorts. Shorts are YouTube’s take on short videos like those on TikTok.
How many views do you need to make money on YouTube?
You don’t get paid per video view. Instead, you get paid when someone watches an ad on your video or clicks on it.
Influence Marketing Hub says that payments vary, but the average YouTube channel can expect to make about $18 per 1,000 ad views. Depending on how many ads people watch, that comes to $3 to $5 per 1,000 video views.
When do you start making money on YouTube?
When your balance gets to $100, you’ll get paid. Say that it takes about 1,000 views of a video to earn $4 from people who saw ads. To make $100 from those ads, you would need 25,000 people to watch your video.
You might not get paid for a few months if your channel is small. You should also know how Google, which sends out Ad-sense payments, deals with taxes.
2. With affiliate marketing, you can get a cut.
Affiliate marketing could be the best way to make money off of your YouTube traffic, especially if you plan to make videos reviewing products. This is how it works:
You find a company or seller with an affiliate program, like Amazon Associates, and ask to join.
Once you’re accepted, you’ll use their process to make custom links to products you want to talk about in your videos.
Demonstrate, review, or talk about the products in your YouTube videos. When you upload, put your affiliate marketing link(s) in the description field.
As an affiliate of a brand, if someone clicks on your custom link and buys a product, you’ll get a commission.
Amazon Associates is a great way to make money on Amazon, but there are many other ways to do so. Look for possible corporate partners and products to feature on affiliate marketing sites like ShareASale and ClickBank. You can also look on the websites of your favorite brands to find out how to become an affiliate.
Don’t forget to tell your viewers that you work with the brand or brands you’re talking about, and when you shoot your video, be sure to point them to the “link in the description.”
3. Get a deal with a brand and make paid content
Companies that want to reach the people who watch your channel might sponsor your videos or offer you deals to put their products in your videos in exchange for a shootout. These are called “brand deals” in the business world.
The key word here is “audience,” which means that these kinds of deals are more likely to come up if you build a fan base. As your channel grows, you can contact the brands you want to work with directly, or you can use tools like the affiliate marketing sites mentioned above to find corporate partners whose content fits with yours.
You can get a lump sum payment, a commission for each sale, or the product or service for free through a brand deal.
Keep in mind that you must let YouTube know if you have an endorsement or use product placement in a video by checking a box in your video’s details.
4. Sell some merch
If you sell something or offer a service that your audience would be interested in, tell them about it and put links to it in your videos.
You might need to buy materials or find a manufacturer to sell a physical product, but you can also sell downloadable items like e-books, art prints, or virtual classes. Set up a safe way to pay for your goods before you advertise them.
An incentive to sell: Making your own products can be a lot harder than selling those of other companies, but you could make more money this way because you’ll keep most of the money as the owner of the product.
5. Provide Membership
Another way to make money from viewers is to use a membership model. Fans of the channel pay a small fee to subscribe and get perks and/or a special level of access.
Patreon is a popular third-party membership platform. Channel subscriptions are progressively being added to YouTube, but only YouTube Partner Program members may utilise them. More viewers always mean more money. Private seminars, one-on-one video conversations, and other incentives might entice viewers to become paying members.
How much can you make on YouTube?
Breakout YouTube stars with millions of followers are most likely to make seven figures or more. But even content creators who aren’t well known and have a small following can make a good living on the side or even full-time.
