Imagine stumbling upon excellent material for a thrilling spy drama. The story begins with two top agents on a mission together, but a sudden explosion causes them to lose their memory. As the global spy agency, Citadel, crumbles, a powerful crime syndicate emerges. Eight years later, the agents must fight back against both the criminals and themselves.
Allow me to introduce Mason Kane (played by Richard Madden, known for his role as Rob Stark in Game of Thrones), one of Citadel’s best agents. He expertly shifts between action and reaction, excels in physical combat, and is the agency’s most trusted member. Nadia (played by Priyanka Chopra) is a stunningly beautiful agent who knows how to use her fists and guns. Her intelligence and wit make her a true “beauty with brains.”
The first scene sets the tone with the palpable sexual tension between Mason and Nadia. The playful banter between them draws the viewer in before the action takes over, immersing them in the world of Citadel. Stanley Tucci Jr. plays Bernard, a key figure in both Mason and Nadia’s mission.
David Weil, the creator of Citadel, employs a captivating non-linear storytelling technique that keeps viewers engaged. The show strikes a rare balance between action and character development, which is often overshadowed in other action-thrillers.
Performance
Priyanka’s portrayal of a strong female agent who can throw tight punches and save her partner in some sequences is refreshing. Richard’s combat skills and vulnerability are equally impressive and highlight his acting prowess.
The sexual tension between the two characters adds a nice touch to the story, and their on-screen chemistry is undeniable. The background score and music create an adequate dramatic effect, although it is not particularly memorable.
Citadel’s fast-paced and entertaining plot does not drag or bore the viewer. With indications of the show’s development in various parts of the world, including India, there is much to look forward to.
Verdict
Overall, the first two episodes of Citadel provide enough drama and action to make it a worthwhile binge-watch recommendation. David Weil has created “good TV” that does not spell out everything for the viewer but leaves enough room for interpretation. The show is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video, and with six episodes in total, there is plenty to enjoy.
