For the plot of the action thriller “Kuttey” to make sense, you have to forget that dogs are loyal and think about a typical situation where dogs fight on the streets for a piece of food. But ironically, the director shows us that behind the name of this animal are people who are even more dangerous, greedy, and sneaky.
In 2023, Aasmaan Bhardwaj bravely tried to continue his father and master filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj’s heritage with his debut film. Junior Bhardwaj’s debut film resembles his father’s, but it’s not a clone. The group film highlights Aasmaan’s voice. He maintains a slightly altered three-act framework without stiffening.
In “Kuttey,” Naseeruddin Shah plays a drug lord who works with a corrupt police force. Vishal helped Aasmaan write “Kuttey” and added dialogue.
Working with another gang gets Gopal (Arjun Kapoor) and Paaji (Kumud Mishra) into danger. Losing their work worsens their lives. They must pay their superiors to continue on the force. This is when anarchy spreads and pushes everyone into a whirlwind.
Performances
The good news is that the viewer gets to meet Tabu‘s Pammi, the movie’s genuine hero. The actor is regarded as a renowned male celebrity who portrays a dishonest police officer, a frequent high testosterone-character in Indian cinema. Tabu makes it taste better. However, Radhika Apte follows closely. She portrayed a dishonest cop in “Monica, O My Darling” and “Dil Chahta Hai.”
If you’re honest, Konkana and Tabu in “Kuttey” can make you feel like you were enjoying a wonderful delicacy until it was snatched away. When characters take the audience by the collar and play with power and vulnerability, people desire a spin-off.
Bhardwaj builds his storyline and characters slowly, almost to the point where the viewer might get lost in the originally unconnected chapters. The filmmaker uses this occasion to return with a gripping second half that builds to a dramatic conclusion.
‘Kuttey’ begins like a game of luck-based Ludo rather than a tactical game of chess. Each character hunts the other, ready to murder and double cross to reach the safe zone.
Radhika Madan, Shah’s daughter, has everything except freedom. The actor and Shardul, a veteran actor, reveal how horrible things are. Despite the chaos, both actors make the romance narrative compelling.
Gulzar’s music, composed by Vishal Bhardwaj, is one of the film’s highlights. Great music might win over listeners. Gulzar and Bhardwaj’s talent strikes again. Farhad Ahmed Dehlvi, the film’s DOP, crafts gorgeous frames and color tones that fit the tale and bring evil to life.
The rookie director proves himself by making a practically faultless dark satire. Even veteran directors struggle to achieve. The thrilling, action-packed thriller with comic chase sequences delivers only partly.
‘Kuttey’ is worth seeing for its surprise twist and creative take on the grab-and-run subgenre.
