Bhai Dooj, also known as Bhaiya Dooj, is celebrated on the second day following Diwali. This day honors the special bond that exists between a brother and a sister. Sisters place tilak on their brothers’ foreheads and pray for their prosperity and longevity.
Bhai Dooj is observed on the second lunar day of Shukla Paksha, according to the Vikram Samvat calendar. Bhai Dooj will be celebrated on October 26th, 2022. (Wednesday).
Although there are no records revealing the official story of Bhai Dooj’s beginnings. However, it is said that after destroying the demon Narakasura on the day now known as Diwali, Lord Krishna paid a visit to his sister Subhadra, who welcomed him with a tilak on his forehead. Since then, this day has been known as Bhai Dooj.
Another legend has it that on this day, the lord of death, Yamaraja, paid a visit to his sister, Yami, who greeted him with flowers and sweets and put tilak on his forehead. In exchange, the Lord of Death gave her a gift that expressed his feelings for her.
Celebration of Bhai Dooj in different states :
The celebration of Bhai Dooj differs slightly from one another. The celebrations of the occasion in various states of the country are listed below.
- Maharashtra : The celebration is known as ‘Bhav Bij’ throughout the state. Brothers are ordered to sit on the floor where sisters draw a square and devour a bitter fruit known as Karith as part of the sibling celebration. Following that, sisters apply tilak to their brothers’ foreheads, conduct aarti, and pray for the sling’s well-being.
- Bihar : The celebration of Bhai Dooj in Bihar differs greatly from that of the rest of the country. On this occasion, sisters blaspheme and insult their brothers before pricking their tongues as punishment and asking for pardon. In exchange, brothers bless them and give them presents.
- West Bengal : The celebration is known as ‘Bhai Phonta’ in West Bengal. A lot of ceremonies are performed during the celebration. Sisters fast on the day till the ritual is finished. Before praying for the well-being of her brothers, sisters apply a tilak of sandalwood, kajal, and ghee to their foreheads. On this special occasion, a magnificent feast is planned.
